Published to accompany the exhibition at the National Museum of Qatar in 2022, On the Move asks readers to reflect on what we might learn from these communities, experienced in traversing difficult terrain and managing physically demanding lives while responding to the seasons and the needs of the animals on whom they depend, and who in turn depend on them. Grounded in research about the everyday lives, histories, technical expertise and cultural creativity of communities from the Central Sahara, Qatar and Mongolia, the book asks if nomads and herders might provide positive models for, and alternative ways to think about, the ‘good life’. As we all look to an uncertain future in a world overtaken by consumerism, destructive extraction and deep social inequalities, On the Move asks if pastoralists might have something to teach us?
