This exquisitely designed compass is made by Hemisferium – a boutique Spanish manufacturer specialising in producing replicas of historical scientific instruments. This particular item is a reproduction of a 15th century compass.
Made from brass and wood, it has a compass rose separated into 32 divisions with each of the 32 rhumbs equivalent to 11.25º and an external ring divided in 360 º.
Magnetic compasses played an essential role in the development and progression of navigation and cartography. The earliest versions were invented over 2000 years ago, during the Han dynasty in China and are recognised as one of the four great inventions of ancient China, along with printing, papermaking, and gunpowder.
