A plate inspired by 9th century blue and white bowl hailing from Iraq, most likely the city of Basra. The original earthenware is displayed in Museum of Islamic Art and the inscription means, "What was done was worthwhile". Chinese porcelain products were extremely popular in the Middle East from the Abbasid period onwards and soon the potters in Iraq began imitating porcelain by using earthenware with an opaque white glaze. The innovative potters frequently used the cobalt blue colour in their creations and in fact the colour in turn influenced Chinese producers and became heavily associated with porcelain from there on.
