This item is in fact a replica of a 17th century octant, which were predecessor instruments to sextants. Invented in 1730, the octant soon after became an inferior device, as the sextant was invented, offering superior accuracy.
Octants, like sextants, enabled users to measure the angle between an astronomical object and the horizon, which is used for navigational purposes.
Its beautiful design makes for a fantastic decorative element.
