The Astrolabe, which in Greek means “star searcher” was a vital tool for astronomers, astrologers, and surveyors for calculating distances, telling time, measuring heights and determining the positions of celestial bodies. This particular one is a replica of the original item created by Gaulterus Arsenius in 1572, in Louvain, Belgium and can today be seen on display at the Museum if Islamic Art in Doha. It is made for 40.4º Latitude. Astrolabes hold a special place in the history of Islamic peoples, with one of its main uses being to determine prayer time and the direction of Mecca towards which they would turn to pray. The Museum of Islamic Arts in Doha has a number of exquisite astrolabes in its collection, highlighting the importance of these instruments for the Islamic world.
